EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound)

EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound)

Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is an advanced imaging modality that combines endoscopy with high-resolution ultrasound technology, enabling detailed evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract and surrounding structures. EUS plays a pivotal role in the early and accurate diagnosis of diseases affecting the stomach, pancreas, bile ducts, esophagus, and intestines. In addition to diagnostic imaging, EUS allows tissue sampling during the same procedure, streamlining the diagnostic process and facilitating timely clinical decision-making.

Technological Infrastructure and Procedure

EUS is performed using a flexible endoscope equipped with a high-frequency ultrasound transducer at its tip. During the procedure, the endoscope is advanced through the mouth or anus to reach the target area within the gastrointestinal tract.

The ultrasound transducer provides high-resolution visualization of the gastrointestinal wall layers as well as adjacent structures, including lymph nodes, vascular anatomy, and deep-seated organs such as the pancreas. This detailed imaging capability enables accurate assessment of lesions that may not be adequately visualized by conventional imaging techniques.

EUS also facilitates Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration (EUS-FNA), allowing tissue samples to be obtained from suspicious lesions for histopathological evaluation. As a result, both diagnosis and staging can often be performed safely and effectively during a single session.

Advantages

  • High-resolution imaging enables detailed evaluation of deep-seated gastrointestinal and adjacent structures.
  • The ability to combine diagnostic imaging and tissue sampling in a single procedure accelerates the diagnostic pathway.
  • Minimally invasive and can be performed safely without the need for surgical intervention.
  • Early detection capabilities are particularly valuable in pancreatic and gastric malignancies.
  • Associated with a low complication rate and rapid post-procedural recovery.

Clinical Applications

EUS has a broad range of applications in gastroenterology and oncology, including:

  • Pancreatic Diseases: Diagnosis and evaluation of pancreatic cysts, tumors, and chronic pancreatitis.
  • Biliary Tract and Gallbladder Disorders: Assessment of biliary stones, obstructions, and neoplastic lesions.
  • Gastric and Esophageal Cancers: Early detection, local staging, and treatment planning.
  • Lymph Node Assessment: Evaluation and biopsy of suspicious lymph node enlargements.
  • Rectal and Colorectal Diseases: Cancer staging and assessment of inflammatory bowel and colorectal disorders.
